Vascular TRPV4 Channels: Beneficial and Detrimental Effects of a Popular Ion Channel

TRPV4 channel has been one of the most popular ion channels for research in vascular biology in recent times. In the vascular wall, TRPV4 ion channels are found mainly in endothelial and smooth muscle cells. Studies over the past decade have revealed both beneficial and detrimental roles for TRPV4 channels in from the systemic and pulmonary vasculature. TRPV4 channels in endothelial cells have been linked with vasodilation, an increase in capillary permeability, and angiogenesis. TRPV4 channels in smooth muscle cells have been shown to dilate and relax the arteries depending on the vascular bed under consideration. Interestingly, both impaired and excessive activation of TRPV4 channels can lead to vascular dysfunction. Surprisingly, these divergent roles of TRPV4 channels in health and disease have not been discussed on one forum. This symposium will serve as a platform for thought-provoking discussions on the beneficial and detrimental effects of TRPV4 channel activity in the vascular system. We will cover a broad range of recent discoveries on the physiological and pathological roles of TRPV4 channels in angiogenesis, blood pressure regulation, cognitive control, and regulation of pulmonary vascular function. This timely symposium will provide the “bigger picture” on vascular TRPV4 channels and promote discussions on potential ways of targeting the channel for therapeutic benefit. It should be noted that TRPV4 channels are also widely studied in other organ systems. Therefore, this symposium will attract audiences working in vascular biology, microcirculation, ion channels, calcium signaling, pulmonary circulation, and TRPV4 channels in other organ systems.

Two experts on TRPV4 ion channels wil co-Chair the symposium: Dr. Sailaja Paruchuri from University of Akron (expert on TRPV4 channels in pulmonary pathologies) and Dr. Swapnil Sonkusare (exprt on TRPV4 channels in endothelial and smooth muscle cells) from the University of Virginia. The speakers include Dr. Thodeti (TRPV4 channels in tumor angiogenesis), Dr. Sonkusare (TRPV4 channels in blood pressure regulation), Dr. Dorrance (cerebrovascular TRPV4 channels in cognitive function), and Dr. Kuebler (TRPV4 channels in pulmonary vascular pathologies).

This symposium focuses on the essential roles of TRPV4 channels in the microvasculature. Therefore, the Microcirculatory Society may be interested in co-sponsoring this symposium.
