Trainee Funding #2: Don't Take It For Granted Symposium Series - The Sales Pitch: How to Sell Your Science and YOURSELF

Applying for funding as a trainee is a critical but daunting process. Honing your grant writing skills and navigating the path to funding facilitates future success not just in academia but in many career paths. One of the most common areas in which trainees seek guidance from the APS Trainee Advisory Committee is in the challenges presented by selecting, writing and reviewing trainee grants. This symposia series will take place over three sessions and will demystify the veiled process of achieving funding as a trainee. In session #1 we will present a catalog of opportunities for trainees to apply to, including those at common funding agencies such as NIH but also other hidden gems of funding possibilities. This session will be composed of two parts, the first of which will focus on NIH-associated opportunities such as types and eligibility requirements of the various trainee and career development grants, institute selection and navigating deadlines and study section choices. In part 2 we will discuss funding opportunities from more non-traditional sources. In session #2 we will provide advice on selling both your science and YOURSELF. Part 1 will present tips and tools to write a science proposal that concisely and efficiently communicates your research goals. In the second part of the session, we will focus on selling yourself as a candidate, including advice on training plans and personal statements. In session #3 we will take an interactive approach to give an inside view of the grant review from the perspective of a mock study section. “Reviewers” from the Trainee Advisory Committee will participate in a chaired mock study section that will demonstrate the grant review process encompassing the presentation of the grant, discussion and scoring.
