APS Annual Meeting at Experimental Biology

Staying Organized: Personal Productivity

Symposium — Thursday, April 29, 2021 — 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM — Virtual Session, Room APS-2
Career Opportunities in Physiology Committee — Chair: Tracy Baynard — Co-Chair: Vienna Brunt

The Career Opportunities in Physiology Committee (COPC) is proposing a 3-part symposium series focused on the theme “Staying Organized.”  This theme was chosen after surveying APS committees in career symposium topics for 2021, as this topic rose to the top in the survey results.  This proposal details the 2nd of the 3-part career symposium series:  Dr. Susan R Johnson has her own consulting company “Thriving Amidst the Chaos” (since the late 90s), whereby she provides individual coaching and gives talks to various organizations on developing effective strategies for thinking about your work, organizing your materials, taking action, and planning, which allows for one to focus on what one is doing in the moment.  Her philosophy is centered not on managing time, but rather on managing one’s use of time.  She emphasizes there are many great tools available, but not one single system works for all.  With this, the idea is to not change things that already work, but to consider alternatives to things that could be improved.  She speaks to procrastination, prioritizing time, delegating, email overload, deadlines, and handling interruptions.  She has written a number of articles for the Academic Physician & Scientist, and coupled with her extensive speaking and coaching experience, Dr. Johnson makes for an excellent choice to speak on the topic of personal productivity.
