APS Annual Meeting at Experimental Biology

Staying Organized: Laboratory Management

Symposium — Thursday, April 29, 2021 — 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM — Virtual Session, Room APS-2
Career Opportunities in Physiology Committee — Chair: Tracy Baynard — Co-Chair: Nirupama Ramkumar

The Career Opportunities in Physiology Committee (COPC) is proposing a 3-part symposium series focused on the theme “Staying Organized.”  This theme was chosen after surveying APS committees in career symposium topics for 2021, as this topic rose to the top in the survey results.  This proposal details the 1st of the 3-part career symposium series:  Dr. Jeremy Boss wrote the book “Academic Scientists at Work: Navigating the Biomedical Research Career”, which has been a go-to guide for not only new biomedical academics, but also established investigators, for over a decade.  Dr. Boss has presented at a multitude of conferences over the course of his career on various topics he has covered in this book, and we would like for him to present specifically on Laboratory Management.  Topics that will be covered will include money management, hiring/firing staff, supervising staff, establishing laboratory policies, following institutional guidelines, and providing support/guidance to staff.  Dr. Boss will provide the audience with tips and tricks of the trade, and will importantly let them know it is okay to seek help in certain areas (e.g. budgeting), and where that help may be located at their institution.
