Sex and Metabolic Health: Emerging Challenges and Discoveries

Sex/Gender Research Interest Group — Chair: Barbara T Alexander — Co-Chair: Brittany B Rice

The Sex and Gender Research Interest Group Symposium will examine the role of sex hormones in metabolic disease. Dr Yanes is a clinician scientist, Endocrinologist, who treats PCOS patients and will present on the role of androgens in the onset and treatment of PCOS. Dr Pearson will present on how the intrauterine environment can result in long-term changes that can predispose an individual to diseases later in life. Dr Devries will present on the role of estrogen and aging in metabolic disease, focusing on muscle metabolism and mitochondrial changes between the sexes. The goal of this session is to provide an overview of how sex steroids influence chronic disease.
