Neuro-Immune Interactions in Inflammatory Homeostasis

Stressors (psychological and physical) and inappropriate inflammation increase the risk and severity of many mental and physical pathologies including mood disorders, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.  We will introduce pathogen versus sterile inflammation, inflammatory receptor-ligand interactions, microbial associated molecular patterns (MAMPs), pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), danger associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), and recent discoveries of the role of the inflammasome and exosome-associated miRNA in inflammatory homeostasis.  We will also examine the immunologic and neurobiologic mechanisms by which peripheral cytokines may neural activation of the dopamine system as part of the reward circuitry in humans.  Finally, CNS-immune interactions and underlying cellular and molecular neurodegenerative mechanisms in multiple sclerosis will be discussed.
